JANG SOOJI
Jang Sooji’s paintings explore vulnerability, identity and the desire for comfort through a recurring cast of imagined figures. Her long-running So, Nyeo series developed from her own experience of the uncertainty of becoming an adult, but gradually evolved into a more universal reflection on anxiety, loneliness and the search for emotional refuge.
Her figures inhabit dreamlike spaces filled with animals, plants and symbolic objects drawn from memory. These elements act as forms of psychological protection, allowing the paintings to hold difficult emotions within an atmosphere that remains gentle, intimate and luminous.
Jang graduated with a BFA and MFA in Painting from Konkuk University and has maintained an active exhibition practice in Korea since 2008. Recent solo exhibitions include IDEAL GIRL at Soobiji Gallery, Busan (2024), Long, Long Ago, They Lived Happily Ever After at Gallery A, Seoul (2022), and The Existence of Existence at CL Art, Seoul (2021).
Her work has also been presented at Seoul Auction, KIAF, Art Busan, BAMA, the Hong Kong Art Fair, Brussels Art Fair, and Breeze Art Fair, alongside exhibitions at institutions and galleries including Seoul Museum, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Lotte Gallery and Hyundai Department Store.
