YANG SUNGHOON
Yang Sunghoon revisits the form of the Korean moon jar, bringing one of the most recognisable forms of Korean ceramic tradition into a contemporary pictorial language. Rather than simply depicting the vessel, he transforms its familiar shape into an atmospheric image, exploring the quiet presence of form, light and memory.
His paintings retain a sense of the moon jar’s historical and cultural resonance while allowing it to become something more ambiguous and contemporary. The restrained forms and softly layered surfaces create a contemplative quality, balancing familiarity with a sense of distance and dream.
Yang studied Western Painting at Keimyung University and its graduate school in Korea. He has presented solo exhibitions at Han Collection, London, Tong-in Gallery and Dongwon Gallery, and has participated in major art fairs including Hong Kong Art Fair, KIAF, Art Seoul and Busan Art Fair.
His work offers a distinctive perspective on contemporary Korean painting: one that does not abandon tradition, but allows a deeply familiar Korean form to be seen again through a contemporary sensibility.
