Gallery JIB presents SOUGHT AND FOUND, an exhibition bringing together six contemporary Korean artists who are actively working in Seoul today.
The artists work across painting, ink, mixed media and other forms, with very different starting points. Their works consider memory and origin, relationships and growth, energy and sensation. What connects them is an interest in what remains beyond what we can immediately see: something remembered, felt, carried or quietly experienced.
For Yang Sunghoon, this begins with the familiar form of the Korean moon jar. He revisits a form shaped by centuries of history, considering how its memory and sensibility might be seen again through a contemporary eye.
Woo Jongtaek explores gi — the energy that moves between nature and human experience. In his paintings, this unseen force becomes movement, gesture and abstraction.
Lim Hyunhee works with ink, allowing it to flow, overlap and settle on paper. Through this restrained process, the surface opens into spaces that suggest water, night and breath, inviting a slower, more physical way of looking.
Kwon Soohyun looks at the energy created within relationships: encouragement, expectation and the forces that pass between people and return to them. Her work considers connection not as something fixed, but as something continually formed and renewed.
Jang Sooji explores the uncertainty and energy of youth and growth. Her warm yet unsettled images hold the experience of a self still taking shape.
Kim Seoul treats the surface as a place where memory can be held. Like opening a box in which old memories have been carefully put away, she folds time and thought into her work, creating a quiet sense of depth within the flat surface.
Together, these works bring a part of the contemporary art scene of Seoul into direct encounter with audiences here. Removed from their usual context, the works meet one another in a new space, where different histories, sensations and ways of seeing can begin to mingle.
SOUGHT AND FOUND is not about knowing in advance what we are looking for. A work may lead us towards a memory, a question, a sensation or a longing we had not yet named.
Perhaps, in looking at these works, we may discover something we did not know we were looking for.
